Cohasset 8 Abington 0

The Cohasset boys lacrosse team improved its record to 3-0 with a rare shutout victory over Abington on the road on Monday. Once again, the Skippers played on a wet and muddy field on a raw afternoon. The field conditions slowed Cohassets vaunted offense as players had trouble keeping their feet in the slippery conditions. Abingtons sophomore goaltender, South Shore All Star Ryan Walsh, also played a great game stifling the Cohasset offense with over twenty saves.
Coach Stew Curran thought his team came out a little tired and unfocused. Our tight battle with Scituate on Sunday night still was fresh in our minds and we never got untracked and running like we can. The field was in tough shape for both teams and our team likes to push the ball on offense whenever possible. The slop in front of both goals did slow our cuts and scoring opportunities. The penalties also slowed our offense down since we were a man down for most of the first half and did not have the ball.

With the man advantage, Mark Flibotte started the scoring on a quick stick goal after a feed down low from Mike Grimm. Nate Porter in goal kept the score tied with a circus stop of an Abington shot at point blank range less than a minute later. Flibotte then found Johnny Wade alone on the crease for Wade’s first goal of the game. Cohasset once again suffered from the penalty bug as at least ten yellow flags came out against the Skippers in the first half alone. The man down defense was spectacular time and time again turning away the Green Wave without good shots on goal. The man-down defense combinations of seniors Jake Cuneo and Cliff Musto, juniors Anderson Lynner and Vin Curran, sophomore Dana Valentine and frosh standouts, Jake Kissick and Tom Flibotte had many chances (14) to work their magic.

Cohassets offense got its act into a little better gear in the second half again keyed by the defense. Valentine stripped the ball from his attacker, picked up the ground ball with his long stick, raced the length of the field and passed to a wide open Flibotte on the crease for Cohassets third goal. After another solid save, Porter found Chuck Czerkawski with a beautiful outlet pass who quickly delivered the ball to Flibotte who just as quickly found a streaking Grimm for the goal. Flibotte, dodging from behind, assisted again on Wade’s second goal, a great catch and shot in traffic. Grimm then followed with a cannon to the top shelf after a hard bull dodge to the right side. Wade completed his hat trick thirty seconds later on still another assist from Flibotte. Junior middie Alec Livingstone scored Cohasset’s final goal (his first varsity goal) on a bullet to the far right bottom corner which beat the goalie on the stick side.

Mark Flibotte led the Cohasset scoring with 2 goals and 3 assists. Johnny Wade added 3 goals and Mike Grimm had 2 goals and 1 assist. Nate Porter and sophomore goalie Jack Murphy combined for twelve saves and preserved the big shutout win. Cohasset plays Division I State Champion Duxbury at Alumni Field on Thursday afternoon.
