Varsity Girls win opener over Bishop Feehan 14-5

Date last updated 6:42 pm Apr 10th, 2008

After having its first game postponed twice -- and with its coach anxious to get the game in so he could serve a one-game suspension from the end of last season -- the Cohasset girls lacrosse team finally got its season underway on Monday, April 7 with a 14-5 win over a Bishop Feehan team that was playing its first game as a varsity program. The Cohasset girls opened up a 5-0 lead in the game's first few minutes, and spent the rest of the day working on movement and motion and adjusting to game situations. The team expanded its lead to 9-2 at the half and assistant coach Jennifer Palmer -- running the sidelines for Chuck Jaffe, who was suspended last May after a season-ending game played in Wakefield, Mass. -- played mostly reserves in the second half. Freshman Kaci Kucinski paced the team with three goals, while juniors Caitlin Mahoney and Kayla Farren scored twice each. Sophomore Kaleigh Teague picked up a goal and two assists and freshman attacker Kelsey Erler scored her first high school goal and added a helper. Amy Meikleham, Grace Clougherty, Katie Gaumer, Lindsay Hill and Isabelle Franklin all had solo goals as part of a balanced Skipper scoring attack, and sophomore Hannah Burgess notched her first varsity point with an assist. Junior Amanda Masotta, stepping into the goaltending position vacated by South Shore League All-Star Aisling Guinee, made five saves to win her debut effort. The play of Masotta -- who has been taking a crash couse in goaltending since switching to the position at the start of practice in mid-March -- will be crucial to the development of the team, and getting a first win and some confidence from it was a key first step. The Cohasset girls host Abington on Tuesday, April 8, then head to Duxbury on April 10 before hosting Fairhaven on April 11, as part of an opening stretch of four games in five days.
