Cohasset 12 Scituate 10 In a rematch of last years state championship game, the Cohasset boys lacrosse team beat Scituate last Sunday night 12 to 10 on a sloppy Alumni Field in a cold, wind-driven mist. Over one hundred fans and students braved the elements and were treated to another classic in this great rivalry. Cohasset grabbed the early lead on a textbook fastbreak which ended on a quick stick goal from senior middie Pete Ernst on a beautiful feed from All-American, senior co-captain, Mark Flibotte. After Scituate scored three unanswered goals, senior co-captain Mike Grimm brought the Skippers to within one with a roll dodge through two defenders and a quick release to the upper corner. A Cohasset penalty gave Scituate the man advantage and the Sailors scored again. Dodging from behind, Grimm then found fellow captain Chuck Czerkawski alone inside the restraining line and Czerkawski let go a rocket to the lower corner. Grimm followed with a whirling dodge from the side -- shooting and scoring as he fell on the slippery turf. After another Scituate goal on the man-up, Grimm scored again unassisted. Scituate found the cage before the half-time whistle to take a 6-5 lead at intermission. The key to this victory was Cohassets penalty killing. At the start of the second half, the Skippers found themselves two men down as a result of some late hits in the last seconds of the first half. Fortunately, the man-down defense of juniors Vin Curran and Andrew Smith, freshman Jake Kissick, sophomore Dana Valentine and goalie, senior co-captain, Nate Porter, were up to the task and prevented the Sailors from taking advantage. Coach Curran lauded his defenders. We had way too many penalties today, but our man-down defense was outstanding. Stopping Scituate at the start of the second half was critical and gave my team a lot of momentum. Cohasset followed the big stop with three unanswered goals to take the lead and never looked back. Czerkawski found Flibotte in the middle of the Scituate defense and Flibotte buried an incredible shot from his knees after getting knocked down. Flibotte scored again after picking up a loose ball on a scramble in front of the cage. Czerkawski followed with another quick strike assisted by Grimm. After a Scituate goal, Grimm scored again on a shot from the wing after driving hard to his right. Grimm opened the fourth quarter scoring on a face dodge after a beautiful give-and-go from Czerkawski. Junior attackman Johnny Wade then grabbed his own rebound off the Scituate goalie’s stick and put it in the back of the net. Flibotte then found Grimm alone again on the wing and Grimm buried his sixth goal of the game to give Cohasset a comfortable 12–7 lead. However, no lead is ever comfortable when these two teams meet. Scituate fought back hard scoring the last three goals of the game to make the final score close. Grimm led all scorers with six goals and three assists. Flibotte and Czerkawski each added 2 goals and 2 assists. Porter was again outstanding in goal with 20 saves and a very intelligent clearing game.
