Cohasset U13 Boys Blue
Sunday, April 6th the Cohasset U-13 Blue team traveled to Lakeville, MA in what turned out to be tough fought mud bath lacrosse game for Cohasset who lost the game six to five. Lakeville scored the go ahead goal with 23 seconds remaining on the clock. The field conditions were poor at best. By game time the rain was lightly falling and the field was torn up and submerged in a few inches of sticky mud from a prior game. But both teams wanted to show off their talents for the season opener and Referee Dan Ray did not have the heart to call the game.
Cohasset took the opening lead during the 1st half with the hard fought efforts led by the attack of Adam Benson, Charlie Michalowski and Jeff Powers. By the end of the half Charlie Michalowski had one goal and Jeff Powers had two. In what looked like a regular rugby scrum the Cohasset attack was tenacious and able to consistently come up with the most ground balls in what proved to be a true challenge all afternoon as the game ball was repeatedly plugged in the mud. Goalie Tommy Powers and Owen Kefallinos led the rock solid defense of Timmy Gillis, Derek Benson and Cole Morrison who repeatedly denied Lakeville the opportunity to get shots off. By the end of the first half Powers had made eight saves and the Cohasset defense had come up with ten ground balls.
The second half proved to be a little more physical as Tim Giuggio, Danny Tangherlini and Charlie Michalowski stepped up the contact and physically pounded away at Lakeville in ground ball combat. At one point in the second half Cohasset was down two men with both Michalowski and Tangherlini in the penalty box for roughing. The Cohasset midfield was led by the lighting quick speed of Cole Kissick, Conner Hayden and Tommy O’Brien. Time and again Cohasset was able to clear the ball to Kissick or Tangherlini who proceed to take off like a stallion running in quick sand. Chris Lund, Ian Kennedy and Chris Brierley all played tough defensive middies.
During the second half Cohasset was able to put two more goals up on the board with goals from both Kissick and Tangherlini who played on the same midfield. Unfortunately Lakeville proved to be too tough for the defensive unit in the final five minutes of the game and scored three unanswered goals. Cohasset could not clear the ball and Lakeville was able to capitalize.
With less than two minutes remaining in the game Lakeville scored the tying goal and with twenty-three seconds remaining scored the go ahead goal. Coach Powers and Kissick thought the Cohasset team played well under the existing field conditions and the fact that this was the teams’ first outing. “We found out that we have some young players that can catch and throw and move the ball in tough conditions and some older players with a bit of experience who can show the younger players some leadership, help out with ground balls and shooting and most importantly play their positions.”
All in all the kids had a lot of fun and will remember the Great Mud Bowl that 1st Sunday afternoon in early April.
Cohasset Boys U-13 Lacrosse, White Team, Game 1 against Marshfield...
The Boys U-13 White Team came into their first game against Marshfield confident in their skills and eager for a win. The first quarter was a tug of war at the midfield line, with fast breaks to both teams’ creases turned back by good defensive play. Our first shot, by Jimmy Maher, was deflected by a skilled Marshfield goalie. Jimmy came back again with a great feed to a cutting Martin Buckley, who shot for our first goal. Our attackman kept the pressure high with an early round shot by Ross Erler and good work by both Chris Lydon and Sam Morris. The Jimmy/ Buckley midfield combination worked again in the first, with a great outside feed from Jimmy to Martin at the right post for a score.
Marshfield began to wake-up after the first quarter, with a strong midfield drive. Henry Brown made three great saves in the first and also made a few great interceptions at defense. With Martin Buckley as goalie in the second quarter, we were two/ two at the half. The second half was a hard fought battle with Marshfield using its largest, key players to pressure our defense with fast breaks. Newcomer Jack Hoffman had a great showing as defensemen with a number of excellent plays. Colin Whelan showed us real determination by winning face-offs and driving into the crease with one goal for the day. Matt Froio was also a strong force in the transition game advancing the ball to our offence. A great feed by Colin set-up Ryan McElhinney for an excellent shot and score in the third. Down one going into the forth, the score was four to three. Marshfield had the momentum with two additional goals in the forth. In the last minute we were able to score again with an outside and low shot from Patrick Holway.
In the end we lost six to five against a strong Marshfield squad. No regrets and a lot learned, so expect U-13 White to come out strong against Hanover on their home turf…
Cohasset Boys U-13 Lacrosse, Black Team, Game 1 against Duxbury…
A big win in Duxbury…
U-13 Black traveled to Duxbury Sunday. Curtis Golden was smothered by the team at the end of play for having made 10 saves which led to an 8 to 6 win for Cohasset. The offense was led by Max Montgomery with 4 goals and 2 assists. Charlie Steel earned three assists and had a goal. Ryan McKeon contributed an assist. Mark Brown placed two in the net and Will Golden netted one. Jack O'Brien was a constant threat at middie all day. It hard to tell if the middie line of Ben Buckley, Cameron Steele and Tim Hayes is as fast or faster than the middie line of Christian Kennedy, Jake Johnson and Justin Fein. Both of these fifth grader lines were quicker and more focused than their opponents. On defense Jack Stanganelli and Jack Leffel constantly pressured Duxbury. Harry Seraikas made several big checks and interceptions which became key turnovers for Black. We have three first year players: Dylan Bomeisler, Clark Indek and Steve Iontosca. They are showing motivation and are adding depth to the team. Not a bad way to start a lax career. Our boys drew few penalties relative to Duxbury, approximately one third as many minutes. Clean play gave us several Extra Man offense opportunities.
Congratulations to our boys for a great season opener…

Cohasset Boys U-11 Lacrosse, White Team, Game 1 against Marshfield...
Our first game against Marshfield was sure to provide thrills and surprises since we have many new players that have never been in a game. Thrills started at the midfield line with returning player Dan Axelson winning the face-off and making a number of great plays and fast breaks, for 3 goals and two assists. Wing midfielder Charlie DeVries made a few nice plays at the midfield to turn the ball back. We were at their crease again with a strong attack line including Jack Coffman and Chris Norton pressuring their defense. Middie Graham Blackburn was an all-field player Sunday, topping his day off with an assist, two turnovers and one goal. Newcomer Scottie Whelan showed real grit at the attack line with an assist. Throughout the game we also witnessed great plays by defensemen Jackson Dutton, another newcomer to lacrosse and Jack Osten. The defense was lead by our goalie Conor Naughton who took a number of great shots away from Marshfield with some quick stick work.
In the forth quarter Marshfield put on a strong drive by playing their best players and scored again to bring the score to 4 to 3, Cohasset. Midfielder Graham Schwandt helped seal our fate with a final score after a great feed by Jack Coffman, for a first-game win, 5 to 3, Cohasset…. Great job White!
Cohasset Boys U-11 Lacrosse, Black Team, Game 1 against Duxbury…
The Black U11 team started the season at Duxbury and played hard on a wet and cold day. Cohasset got off to a fast start as Liam McHugh flipped an underhand shot into the net for the first goal of the season. The game was back and forth early before Duxbury was able to take control and win the game in the second half. Evan Canney was outstanding on defense with several ground balls and two length of the field clears. Jack Nee and Dan Varney split time in the cage and both came up with great saves to keep Duxbury in check.
At the midfield, Ryan Golz played very strong defense and made several excellent passes. Max Fitzgerald scored on a fast break after running from the center line and firing one past the goalie. Mark Bodner, Richie Kinscherf and Luke O'Brien all hustled for ground balls throughout the game and did not give up until the final whistle. On attack, Thomas Durkin made several hard body checks and scored his first goal of the year on a nice scoop and score from in close.

"Mud Bowl in Lakeville"
Kyle Ferreira (3 goals), Sean Mavilia (2 goals and 1 assist), and AJ Kucinski (4 goals and 2 assists), led an attack that put up 9 goals against Lakeville Sunday in Cohasset Blue Team U-11 lacrosse action; on a rain soaked mud field that covered every player in muck from head to the by the end of the game. It was great fun but a bit cold. Levante Haber supported the attack with 8 ground balls and Wyatt Dominguez picked up another 3. Jack Donohue, Jimmy Farren, and Mike McKelvey led the Midfield with 27 ground balls. Donohue and McKelvey also added an assist. Michael Durkin, Alex Norton, Taggart Eymer, and Owen Burchill kept the ball up field and away from Lakeville. The defense was spectacular with Bryan Counihan leading the way making 6 saves on 9 shots in his debut between the pipes. Cole Joslin picked off 3 passes, J Dietrich recovered 7 ground balls, and was a force on clears. Davis Cronin, Evan Baldry, and Liam Prescott all kept pressure on Lakeville’s attack giving them little room to take shots on goal. Great start for the Blue U-11 Warriors!
