Duxbury 12 – Cohasset 5
Duxbury, the five-time defending Division I state champion, defeated Cohasset, the two-time defending Division III state champion, at Alumni Field on Thursday. It was a beautiful spring day with temperatures over 70 and there was another big crowd on hand. Duxbury, which has not lost a boys lacrosse game to a Massachusetts team in over five years, jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead at the beginning of the first period. If not for some spectacular saves by Nate Porter in the Cohasset net, it could have been worse because Duxbury dominated the possession throughout the period. Chuck Czerkawski finally got Cohasset on the board with a blast to the bottom corner after a feed from Mark Flibotte at the end of the period. The second quarter went pretty much the same way as the first as Duxbury continued to control the ground ball wars and the ball. After three more Duxbury goals made it 6-1, Mike Grimm found Pete Ernst clear in the slot and Ernst buried a bounce shot to the far side. Porter made two great stops at point blank range to keep the Skippers in the game at halftime.
Coach Curran saw plenty of room for improvement in his team’s performance. “Duxbury is a great program, but we did not compete even-up due to our continued inability to stay out of the penalty box. They beat us to many ground balls and even when we got there, we just did not pick it up giving them another good possession. We needed to possess the ball more today and just did not get the job done for 4 periods.” Still, Cohasset did mount a fine comeback in the third period. After a rare Duxbury penalty, Czerkawski scored his second goal of the game again assisted by Flibotte. Grimm then scored on a floater after beating his defender clean on a roll dodge from the side making the score 6-4 at the close of the third period.
The Skipper faithful had visions of the big upset. Unfortunately, two goals would be as close as the score got as Cohasset once again caught the penalty bug in the fourth period. Duxbury scored five goals with the man advantage to put the game away. Curran was again disappointed with the yellow flags (10 in all). “We need to cut down on our penalties as you cannot afford to give a team which moves the ball as well as Duxbury the extra man advantage. They scored 7 goals on us today with their extra-man advantage.” Grimm scored Cohasset’s final goal on a man-up rocket from just inside the restraining line after a feed from Ernst, but it was not nearly enough.
Mike Grimm led Cohasset scorers with two goals and one assist. Chuck Czerkawski also had 2 goals. Mark Flibotte had 2 assists and Pete Ernst had a goal and an assist. Coach Curran reported that “Senior-CoCaptain Nate Porter had 19 saves and is rounding into not only a good leader on the field, but one of the better goalies on the South Shore. Nate had 6-7 huge stops on the doorstep in the game which kept us in the battle”. The Skippers are back in action on Tuesday at Norwell.
