Cohasset 17 - Norwell 5

The Cohasset boys lacrosse team finally got its formidable offense into high gear playing for the first time on a relatively dry field on a sunny Tuesday afternoon in Norwell. After taking the lead on an early goal and playing Cohasset pretty even for the first eight minutes, Norwell took a bad penalty for an illegal stick. For the next three minutes, Cohasset had the man advantage with a Norwell player "locked in" to the penalty box. The Skippers took full advantage running off five straight goals with their man-up offense.

Sophomore Will Wise got Cohasset on the board with a beautiful left-handed shot dodging from behind. When Norwell was flagged again, Mark Flibotte scored on a nifty inside roll dodge after a feed from Chuck Czerkawski. Peter Ernst then stuck a shot into the far right corner assisted by Mike Grimm. After a clean face-off win by Czerkawski, Wise found Johnny Wade alone on the crease for a fast break goal. Wise quickly followed with another beautiful feed to Grimm who scored dodging from behind to make the score 5-1 at the end of the first period.

After still another Norwell penalty, Ernst found Grimm alone up top for a top shelf rocket. Grimm scored again less than a minute later with a floater that somehow eluded the Norwell net minder. Scooping a loose ground ball at the midfield line after a failed Norwell clear, Grimm streaked through the middle of the field and beat the goalie with a hard shot at the hip to the off-stick side. Flibotte found Wade alone on the crease for a quick stick goal and then Flibotte scored twice himself - once on a roll dodge from the side and thirty seconds later on a bull dodge from up top shooting high to low. Nate Porter (with three point blank stops near the end of the half) and the defense led by Jake Cuneo, Cliff Musto, Anderson Lynner and Vince Curran kept Norwell off balance all afternoon. The first half ended with a 11-2 Skipper lead.

The Cohasset offense kept up the pressure and the domination in the second half. Grimm scored twice unassisted beating his man cleanly dodging from behind. After a terrific clearing pass by Czerkawski, Flibotte lost his man on a dodge and found an open Wise for the goal. Czerkawski scored himself on an absolute cannon to the upper near corner from the restraining line. Junior middie Andrew DePaulo found the cage after a beautiful roll dodge from the midline. Wade closed out the Cohasset scoring with his second hat trick of the year on a beautiful inside feed from fellow junior Owen Landon after great ball movement on the man-up. Sophomore Jack Murphy played the entire second half in goal for Cohasset making a number of super stops.

Despite the impressive offensive fireworks, Coach Stew Curran praised his two goaltenders and defenders. "Both Nate Porter and Jack Murphy were absolutely terrific in the goal. Not only did they make some acrobatic stops, but their quick clearing passes really got our offense into the flow. Our defense never let Norwell get on track and did a much better job of staying out of the penalty box today (only 3 flags against Cohasset)." Curran singled out the defensive play of sophomore Dana Valentine, freshman Jake Kissick and senior Cliff Musto and the solid two way middie play of Pete Ernst, PJ McCaw, Andrew Smith, Andrew DePaulo and freshman Thomas Flibotte.

Mike Grimm led Cohasset scorers with six goals and one assist. Mark Flibotte added three goals and two assists. Will Wise had two goals and two assists and Johnny Wade had three goals. Nate Porter had 6 saves in the first half and Jack Murphy added 9 saves in the second half. The Skippers play in the Chowder Cup Memorial Tournament at Scituate High on Thursday and Saturday. The tournament (in memory of PJ Trendowicz #21 Cohasset, Ryan Flannery #9 Scituate, Justin Langham #4 Cohasset and Tim Mahoney #9 Scituate) includes Scituate, Marshfield, Sandwich and Cohasset. An "all tourney" team will be chosen along with a tourney MVP while the proceeds from the event will be donated to lacrosse scholarship fund programs in each of the four towns.
