The Cohasset Lacrosse Boys U-11 White squad played against a physical, well coached Hanover team Sunday, April 13th and came away victorious for the second win of the season. In the first half, Hanover was on their heels, with most of the play at the midfield and against there defense. Hanover came back with a few great shots. Our defense, lead by Goalie Scottie Whalen and defensemen Graham Blackburn, Gavin Dunkleberger and Jack Osten made many turnovers to allow the offense to rack-up 3 goals by the half. Graham made 3 great clears, with one across the midfield line for a feed and score by attackman Jack Coffman. Goalie Whelan was quick at the net and made 4 great saves. Later, Scottie Whelan would relinquish the goal to an equally capable Conor Naughton and as attackman, Scottie racked up a few shots and a goal. Our midfield was well coordinated with Dan Axelson winning his face-offs and showing his full-field skills again with many ground balls, two goals and an assist. Sam Arnold stepped it up this week with three shots, one goal and a number of groundballs and good defensive plays. Will Lucier was strong at midfield and defense with a number of excellent clears and ground balls. Newcomer Jack Speer was quickly engaged as midfielder with a good first game effort. Another force at the midfield was Graham Schwandt, with a few great clears and a goal. The boys played as a team with good passes and contributions from all players. At the final whistle the score was 6 to 2, Cohasset.
The Cohasset Boys Lacrosse U11 Black team played at Hingham on a wet, muddy field and staged a valiant comeback before falling 5-3. After Hingham scored three quick goals in the first quarter the boys settled down and dominated most of the final three quarters. Will Englander was the catalyst to the Black team resurgence as he flipped a ball out of the mud in front of the cage and found the top of the net. Thomas Durkin got in on the action with a quick stick score from in close and Jack Curran found the mark to put the score within one at 4-3. Englander, Durkin and Curran each picked up an assist as well.
The Black team had constant pressure in the Hingham end throughout the second half but could not even the score because they missed the cage several times and the Hingham keeper made some nice saves. After giving up the 3-0 lead early the Black defense and goaltending was outstanding with Evan Canney, Max Fitzgerald, Ryan Golz, Michael Tesauro and keepers Dan Varney and Jack Nee leading the way. The Black team had one final surge over the last three minutes of the game where they had possession the entire time and worked extremely hard to take the lead. The effort was demonstrated with the number of ground balls picked up by Mark Bodner (four), Luke O'Brien (3) and Richie Kinscherf (3). With the same kind of intensity and effort the boys are sure to find success the rest of the season.
Cohasset Lacrosse Boys U-11 Blue Team: A well disciplined and well coached Abington U-11 Team handled the Cohasset Blue Team on Sunday and walked off the field with a 4 to 1 victory. The score was tied at zero at the half, thanks mostly to the heroics of Brain Counihan as goalie, but the second half saw the "Big Blue" come unraveled. Cohasset had several opportunities to score, but kept on turning over the ball. Abington dominated on ground balls and turnovers; and executed their plays very well. After closing the gap to 2 to 1 early in the fourth quarter and looking like the team could get back into the game, Cohasset Blue gained the ensuing faceoff only to turn it over on a forced pass. Abington took control and eventually notched a third goal putting pressure on the Blue offense to put some points on the board. Unfortunately that did not happen and Abington earned a well deserved win.
The Cohasset Lacrosse Boys U-13 White squad won a tough battle against a physically larger Hanover team this Sunday. The win can be attributed to the efforts of every player, since there was no dominating player on the field. Everyone one on the team made at least won significant play to contribute to the 6 to 4 score. This week we ran a strong attack line-up, lead by Jimmy Maher at the crease and Colin Whelan and Ross Erler on the wings. That panned out for us since Maher was able to make 3 goals and 2 assists at point. Whelan was a master at feeding the ball (2 assists) and ground balls, which helped to keep the pressure on Hanover’s Defense. At defense, we had Mats Nelson in the goal, which helped to keep Hanover to four goals, with 5 great saves and excellent clears through the day. Defenseman, Jack McElgun was an imposing force at defense with many excellent ground balls and fast clears from deep in our territory all the way to Hanover’s crease. Aided by Nick Lydon and Mike Yerardi, the defense played an excellent game. Our midfield lines are beginning to take shape as we know which combination of players work best together. Midfielder Henry Brown checked in with an unaided goal, and Matt Arnold also made a great outside shot after a feed from the crease by Whelan. Arnold played a strong game with a number of great clears across the midfield. Martin Buckley and Matt Froio were also strong at the midfield line, winning face-offs and gaining ground balls. Patrick Holway continues to be in the right place, with an assist, many won ground balls and 3 won face-offs. It was also a break-out game for Joey Sestito with one assist. The Cohasset squad has sharpened it’s skills significantly since the first game and with the added element of playing as one, we are very confident in our prospects for the season ahead.
Cohasset Lacrosse Boys U13 Black team traveled to Hingham to face a strong Red program. Hingham scored quickly after first face off but our boys pulled themselves together. Cohasset moved ahead to a 4 to 1 lead by the end of the first quarter, 9 to 1 by the half, 12 to 1 by the end of the third and finished 13 to 2. What a Game for the Cohasset boys! Max Montgomery led the charge with six goals and five assists. Charlie Steele had two goals and two assists. Ryan McKeon had two goals. Cameron Steele had two goals. Zack Coggins also made two assists. Both Ben Buckley and Steven Iontosca came away with assists. Will Golden made one goal with an excellent outside shot. Mark Brown perfected a revolutionary face off draw, won 100% of his face offs and had two assists as well. The Blue Middies Christian Kennedy, Jake Johnson and Steven Iontosca ran the Hingham Red into the ground every quarter with many ground ball wins. On defense, our starting goalie Curtis Golden made three key saves in the first half. Stepping up as goalie in the second half was Dylan Bomeisler who made four saves in his first time at the net. Great job Dylan! The defense forced a number of turnovers to keep Hingham from getting to the cage.
The Cohasset Lacrosse Boys U15 White team took to the road again this past weekend heading to Hanover for what ended up being a very lopsided contest with the Skippers extending their record to 2 - 0 on the season with another dominant performance where the outcome was decided well before the end of the first half. However, despite the score, the boys enjoyed the day by trying out some new positions throughout the second half and with several players providing "break-out" performances in their new and previous roles. After shutting out the competition in the first half, Willy Brown relinquished the cage and got out onto the field and proved that goalies are no slouches either providing some strong defensive prowess and hustle up and down the field. Matt Swanborg, normally a dominant defender, took over the goaltending duties and quickly established himself as the newly appointed back up "net minder" staving off multiple point blank shots and demonstrating a flair for the acrobatic with some interesting kick saves.
Derek Froio traded in his long pole for a short stick and notched his first goal of the season on a crease side feed from Mitch McNary. Derek also provided the basis for another first of the season in combining with Axel Seppala, one of our up and coming 7th graders, with his first points of the year. Derek bull dodged through a scrum of Hanover players and made a quick feed to Axel who was waiting on the crease for an easy score. Seppala followed it up later with an unassisted goal after battling for a ground ball and successfully scooping and shooting all in one fluid motion to notch his second of the game. Andrew Fontaine made his presence known as well playing just about everywhere and also catching a nice rolling feed from Dean McNary to set up his first tally of the season.
All in all it was another fun day for the Cohasset White team. We saw some great diversity in the skill sets of the boys, a team effort throughout, and we managed to chalk up some "firsts" for many that deserved it.
The Cohasset Lacrosse Boys U15 Blue team finished the day on Sunday with their second win of the season. The game ended 11-4 against a tough but overmatched Abington squad. Robby Mahoney started off the scoring with a nice individual effort. The Cohasset squad showed their tenacity as they out hustled the Abington team and consistently won the ground ball battle which led to numerous fast breaks. Charlie Neaves (1g, 2a) playing mid field had several assists, one early in the contest where he picked up a ground ball in the defensive end sprinted out of the zone to lead a classic fast break, feeding Brennan Bukowski (2g, 1a) for the finish. Charlie also spent some time at close defense where he supplemented the defense led by Geoff “Goff” Swain, Teddy Pastos and Alec Hurd The defense was outstanding as they kept the Abington players from getting many shots on goal. Danny “CZ” Czerkawski (1g,1a) played a stellar game on both sides of the field, leading several fast breaks where he assisted Bukowski on a score and on the other end of the tandem when he converted a nice give an go pass from Brennan. In only the second game of his career, Peter Hinman (2g,1a) was able to find the net twice while also gaining an assist on a nice pass to Alec Hurd (1g) who finished impressively, Alec chipped in at both defense and attack. Jimmy Lydon was tough in net all day, holding the Abington team scoreless through three quarters and surrendering only 4 goals on the day, Jimmy continues to shine between the pipes. Hunter Forrer (1a) picked up an assist as he found Peter Hinman on the crease for a score after a nice hustling effort to get the ball in to the attack, Hunter played his usual unselfish game chipping in where needed. Also of note was the fine midfield play of Drew Nahill and John Collins with multiple ground balls and Collins as usual was on the winning end of most of the face-offs. Although unable to list every player, the win was a total team effort with contributions from every player on the roster.
