U-13 Blue Team

The Cohasset U-13 Blue Team is off to a competitive start with a 2-1-1 record with wins against Abington and Bridgewater, a tie against Lakeville and a physical loss this past Sunday to Norwell (7-4).   The team is led by returning players Tommy Powers, Cole Kissick and Danny Tangherlini who have all provided leadership, stability and ball control with their size, speed and tenacity.  Powers has been a constant threat with his size and rocket shot while Kissick and Tangherlini have been invaluable with their ability to win faceoffs, ground balls and lightning speed to get the ball down field when it absolutely has to be there.  The defense is led by the efforts of Cole Morrison, Derrick Benson and rookie Timmy Gillis who has been a physical threat to all attackmen and midfielders attempting to score on the solid goalie skills of Owen (the wall) Kefallinos.  The offense is led by four upcoming hot shots Charlie Michalowski, Jeff Powers, Adam Benson and Sam Murphy who all are able to move the ball consistently and score goals when they have to.  The midfield has a combination of rookie and veteran players providing a well balanced offense and defense including Timmy (I didn’t mean to hit’m that hard) Giuggio,  hot wheels Tommy O’Brien, Chris and Michael Lund, Conner Heyden, Ian Kennedy, Holis Hunnewell, Timmy Hayes and Chris Brierley.  The Blue team has played well thus far and is learning to play consistent, fundamental lacrosse with the expectation of finishing the second half of the season as a dominant team in their overall division.

U-11 White Team

Our first home game this year was against Barnstable on Sunday, April 27th and with just 10 regular players at the beginning of the game, we know we were in for a tough day.  Normally we have enough to play three midfield lines, giving the kids a needed break, so we barrowed a two players from the Black team which helped a bit.  From the start however, it was easy to realize that winning would not come easy.  We went down two zero within the first 3 minutes of the game.  Goalies Scott Whelan and Jack Coffman did their best throughout the day, but their midfield ran us into the ground.  They would face break, draw our defensemen and either pass to the open attackman or shoot.  Although Cohasset did a much better job keeping position, the basic skills and confidence was not there to ensure a full field/ full team success.

We had the hustle and a number of players stepped up to play hard while Barnstable continued to rack up goals.  Graham Schwandt did his best, winning his face-offs and had a few good drives to the crease.  He came away with two goals for the day.  Sam Arnold was also strong at the midfield with a number of groundballs, two clears and a goal, after a feed from Jack Coffman.  Jack played well at Attack with two goals and a number of good feeds from behind the goal.  We also saw newcomer Charlie Swartwood in his first game this year make a number of excellent plays and two clears to the offense.  Jackson Dutton and Will Lucier played a tough game, showing great promise for the next half of the season.

We broke down however at defense, partly due to the run-down midfielders and due to limited training.  In the end, Barnstable rolled over us 13 to 6…

U11 Black Team

The Black team hosted Hull and jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Dan Varney and Thomas Durkin.  Unfortunately Cohasset got into a bad habit of not covering at the midfield and Hull scored five straight goals before Max Fitzgerald dodged several defenders and bounced one into the top corner just before halftime to make it 5-3.

The game went back and forth in the second half and Evan Canney had two outstanding full field clears, just missing a goal on the first and burying a hard bouncer on his second rush up field to pull the Black squad within one goal.  Cohasset hit the post on a potential game tying shot from Jack Curran and ran out of steam after that, giving up two more goals to make the final 8-5 Hull.

Goalies Jack Nee and Dan Varney both played very well and attacker Liam McHugh continued his strong play scoring a goal in the second half.
