Girls youth teams have mixed record in games against Scituate
After a beautiful week of weather in Cohasset, it was back to reality on Sunday, April 27.Raw spring weather was back and the 11-and-Under White team (grades 3 and 4) visited a Scituate team that came ready to play. Scituate controlled the first 10 minutes of the game with three quick goals before Cohasset could get untracked. The defense shut down the scoring and ground balls were dominated by Cohasset led by Corey Golden with 5 on the day. Third graders Emma Humphrey and Charlotte Morrison showed tremendous hustle adding to the loose ball domination to close down the half. Alexandra Leahy opened the second half with a nice bounce shot goal assisted by Lilly Smith. Madigan O’Neill’s shot just missed the bottom corner after making a nice catch from line mate Grace McMeekin. The two teams traded possessions the last 10 minutes of the game and Scituate squeaked out one more goal for a final score of 4-1.
13-and-Under (grades 5 and 6) Cohasset’s 13-U Blue team played most of its home game against Scituate Blue with only one sub, but that did not deter the squad from rolling to a 10-2 win. Lexa Grasz won the opening draw and cut around two defenders to start the scoring. Christina Tedeschi followed that with a strong drive to the cage that she finished with a flip over the goalie's shoulder. Scituate was aggressive with their checking, but the Blue team stayed focused and dominated the ground ball battle with Grasz, Kathryn Dunn, Caty Gilman, Micaela Braun and Shannon McGowan all scooping at least three.
Cohasset led 5-0 at the half as it controlled possession and goalie Olivia Blackburn stopped any decent Scituate scoring chances. Blackburn finished with 8 saves and was flawless clearing the ball. The Blue squad moved some players around to keep the game competitive and started to get its passing game in gear as Molly Fitzgerald fired one across the 8-meter to Grasz for a nice finish and her fourth goal of the game. Dunn finished with a hat trick and an assist, Eliza Murphy found the mark for a score and Braun rounded out the scoring with a goal.
The Cohasset 13-U White team lost to a talented Scituate White team that used its very deep bench to wear down its opponent. The first half started off with a goal by Maddie Curley, but Scituate answered with three goals and the ball spent 70% of the first half in the Cohasset defensive zone, where Taylor Frederick made a heroic stand (nine saves) just to keep her team in the game. At halftime, the White team made some adjustments to players positions, moving the attack into the midfield and this paid off initially with two rapid goals from Peyton MacNaught – finishing a Curley feed -- and Morgen Montgomery to tie the game. Again Scituate, came roaring back, substituting middies on the fly and double/triple teaming all over the field when Cohasset had possession. Maggie Littlejohn did a great job on defense and on several occasions cleared the ball from one end of the field to the other. Scituate scored four unanswered goals before Curley netted her second score of the game. It was not enough to spark a Cohasset comeback, however, as Scituate kept the pressure on and used it to cruise to a 10-4 final.
15-and-Under (grades 7 and 8) Vacation week typically takes its toll on bench strength, but Cohasset’s 15-U Blue team was nearly intact as it hosted Scituate Blue on April 27, and that continuity showed, as the squad raced out to a 7-3 halftime lead. Whitney Jaffe led the way with a hat trick, and Alison Whelan, Danielle Healy and Sydney Blanchard scored single goals; Hajjar’s score was assisted by Sage Stebbins. Scituate made it a much closer contest in the second half, but stellar goalkeeping from Sarah Evans – 10 saves on the day, most of them down the stretch – was enough to win it for the home team. Whelan scored her second goal of the day, Jaffe set up Stebbins for a score and then finished the scoring with an insurance goal, as Cohasset closed the game out at 10-8. Cohasset’s White team was shorthanded in heading over to Scituate to play Scituate White, and some of that showed. In the early going, the game went back and forth. Whitney Jaffe, Katherine Brown and Hope Kissick all scored first-half goals, but that wasn’t enough to give the visitors a lead at the half, as Scituate scored four of its own. That would turn around in the second half, as the three first-half goal scorers all repeated their feats in the second half – with Kissick adding yet another goal by netting a Sarah Evans feed – which gave Cohasset just enough scoring to steal away a 7-7 tie. Stephanie Brierley made 6 saves to keep the Cohasset squad in the game. The three goals by Kissick were enough to move her into fifth place on the all-time scoring list for Cohasset girls youth lacrosse; passing Maura Barnes. She now has 67 career points, on 55 goals and 12 assists. Jaffe’s assist in the Blue game gave her 18 for her career, tying her for the program’s all-time lead with Lindsay Allard.
