U11 Blue
Cohasset Blue finished a clean sweep of Hingham on Sunday beating the neighborhood rivals for the 3rd time this spring. Cohasset played their best game of the season competing end to end for a full 50 minutes. Bragging rights were at stake as the last meeting between the two sides was won by Cohasset on a last second goal in front of a partisan Hingham crowd.

This game started like the last two with even draws, a balanced field and two strong netminders. Regan O’Donnell back from a thumb injury kept the game close with five saves in the 1st half as the Cohasset defense struggled early against a very fast and strong Hingham front line. Hingham scored first but the lead was short lived as Clair Glavin tied the game in the 6th minute. Lanie Schwartz then built on them momentum ripping the upper corner after losing her defender on a roll to the right of the crease. This was one of three goals and three assists for Schwartz on the day. Madigan O’Neil followed with a scrappy goal 3 minutes later after winning her own rebound just outside the crease. A direct penalty led to the 4th Cohasset goal when Colleen McGowan was fouled to left of the crease and followed up with a blister into the left lower corner.

Cohasset left the 1st half 5-4 and felt lucky to be in the lead. Though the second half started much like the first, Cohasset found its stride on the momentum created by a strong defensive push. O’Donnell directing a defense of Bridgett Condon, Megan McElgunn, Abbie Thomas and Caroline O’Brien turned back 4 consecutive live balls. Three additional drives were thwarted by strong rides and forced turnovers by Ellie Jackish and Minnie Stavis. Stavis and Jackish again provided the speed at middie to drive the transition. This was all the Cohasset needed as the Blue attack took over from there. Shea Kearney (switching to attack from middie because of a foot injury) added firepower to already potent line, which included Colleen McGowan, Kristi McNary, and Clair Glavin. Kearney notched another 2 goals and 3 assists while dominating on the ground with 7 ground balls.

The Cohasset midfield stabilized the game again by dominating on the ground. Nicki Federle, Lilly Smith and Holy Maher each won 6 ground balls and controlled the middle of the field. Maher also added points with 2 assists and a goal off an Olivia Sanderson feed into the slot. The stingy defense and potent offense sets the Blue up to be the team to beat in the South Shore Jamboree set for June 14th. The Cohasset Blue will be back in action on Friday night at 5:30 in Plymouth and again on Sunday in Norwell at 3:45.

U11 White
After not playing a game since May 11th the girls U-11 white team was ready to play. With several weeks of practice to sharpen their skills it was evident as they played their best game of the year beating sandwich 8-5.

Cohasset controlled the game early and never seemed to loose focus. The face-offs were dominated by midfielders Corey Golden, Alexandra Leahy, Olivia Gomez and Emma Humphrey. If they did not win the face-off Libby Mullaney and Bennett Tierney were winning the ground balls and able to move the ball down into the offensive zone and get the ball to the attack.

Just like the last game, third grade attack player Kaitlin McGovern started the scoring by sweeping left from in front of the cage and sticking the shot into the lower left hand corner. Kyle Burke was next. After getting her own rebound she made sure the second shot was going in shooting hard to the upper left corner. Thanks to a stingy defense and interceptions by Charlotte Morrison and Vivian Littlejohn Cohasset was able to score 2 more times in the first half. Emma Humphrey scored both goals as she displayed some her dazzling roll dodges and quick feet. Olivia Gomez almost put the game out of reach for sandwich just missing the net on 2 great shots.

In the second half Marcella Flibotte passed the goalie gear on to Kyle and resumed her regular position back at attack. After making 3 saves in net the first half she started the scoring for Cohasset to take a 5 -2 lead. Sandwich scored the next 2 goals but that was it. The defensive trio of Nonie Thomas, Julia Richardson and Charlotte did not allow them back in. They scooped the loose ball and transitioned the ball to the offensive zone with textbook clearing. Madelyn Littlejohn scored next for Cohasset as she dodged through sandwich defenders and made a nice shot to the lower right corner. The 7th Cohasset goal was scored on a nifty give and go between Alexandra Leahy and Kara Nelson, with Kara finishing it off by shooting a nice bounce shot to the back of the net. It wasn’t over yet…Emma Humphries scored her third goal of the game making it a hat trick for her.

U13 Blue
The U13 Blue team continued its hot streak with a sixth straight win against Sandwich after losing their opener. Goalie Olivia Blackburn continues to display excellent skill and technique between the pipes, turning away nine shots. Several of her saves came on very hard, low shots that Blackburn was able to keep in front of her by using quick feet and great balance. The defense also stood tall in front of their keeper, with Shannon McGowan, Emily Robbins, Caty Gilman and Rebecca Brown all making plays. McGowan (two assists) and Robbins also made outstanding clearing passes setting up several fast break goals.

The Blue squad has had a very balanced scoring attack all season and it was on display again, as Megan Fitzgerald scored her first goal of the season and Annie McElgunn, Molly Fitzgerald, Lexa Grasz, and Kathryn Dunn (hat trick) each had at least two goals. Victoria Bryan picked up a single marker and continues to dominate the draws and ground balls at midfield. Cohasset finished the day with a great fast break goal as McElgunn dodged several defenders and made a perfect feed to Jackie Driscoll who blasted it home to make the final 12-5. Maggie Ernst once again showed great hustle and just missed her first career goal on a hard shot from in close.

U13 White
The Cohasset Girls U13 White Team made a valiant effort but came up short against Plymouth 11-7 on a stormy afternoon in Plymouth. The game started with a quick goal from Attack Peyton MacNaught, but was quickly suspended when a lightning bolt was seen by some of the parents present. Both sides agreed to restart or cancel the game in 15 minutes. The storm passed and we proceeded with play. In the first half Cohasset jumped out to a quick lead with Mackenzie Axelson winning many of the draws and both Maddie Curley (six shots, four goals) and Peyton MacNaught (two shots, two goals) leading the charge on offense. Plymouth played very tough and made some defensive adjustments that brought them close at halftime (5-4).

The Plymouth team came out in the second half with a strong attack and solid goal tending to take the lead with a six goal run with Cohasset answering with two goals (one from Caroline Farren who had a solid game overall). Our two goalies put up a good fight (Hanna Cooper in the first half with three saves and Taylor Frederick in the second half with five saves including a couple of very big ones early in the half). Other notable play came from Maggie Littlejohn, Lilly McCarthy, Katie McCabe and Isabelle Dunne for their clearing of the ball into the offensive end. Caroline Prescott took one for the team on defense and was hit with a shot by Plymouth (the ball did not go in and she will recover to play again this week). U13 White is looking forward to two more games this season with a makeup game against Hingham on Thursday evening at 6PM (Deer Hill School) and our final game on Sunday June 8th at 1:15 in Braintree.
