Girls Youth Lacrosse Opening Day

The Cohasset Girls U15 Blue team started the season off on a good note as they traveled to Braintree on a surprisingly warm, sunny day.  Braintree started the scoring before Cohasset got their game in gear and quickly scored three goals.  Kristin Alexander connected with Mariel Teague on a long pass to start the scoring and then Hope Kissick and Kate Bodner found the twine as well.  Teague set up behind the goal and made two outstanding passes to Kissick and Bodner as they both scored again.
Cohasset was very strong on the defensive end all day, as Lexa Grasz and Alexander split the halves in the cage.  Defensive stalwarts Caitlin Mavilia, Maria Buckley, Kylie Coffman and Abby Carrier made life tough on the Braintree attackers and cleared the ball very well.  Grasz would return to her midfield position in the second half and ripped two goals into the net and assisted Kissick on her third of the day.  Nicole Farren notched two scores, with the second coming on a great feed from Cassedy Gwynn.  Braintree got as close as two goals at one point, before Cohasset pulled away for a 12-7 win.
In Duxbury, the Cohasset 7th grade girls kicked off the season against a talented Duxbury 7th grade team.   Cohasset started off strong, scoring first with a hard shot high in the corner from Mackenzie Axelson off a great feed from Maggie Littlejohn.    The fast pace was set by middies Victoria Bryan, Micaela Durkin, Isabelle Dunne, Christina Tedeschi and Mikayla McGrath who made quick clears downfield with great passing and dodging.   The game was back and forth all day with Cohasset holding the lead for most of the game. Second to score was Maddie Curley off of a pass in traffic from Kathryn Dunn.  The action was up and down the field with goalie, Olivia Blackburn, making several good saves.  Blackburn had a great game with 10 saves against strong Duxbury shooters.  It was an all-out team effort with strong defense by Molly Fitzgerald, Shannon McGowan, Emily Robbins, and Isabelle Seal.  Dunne, who was lightning quick throughout the game, scored next off of a pass from Curley.  Dunn fired the next one in followed by Bryan scoring with a nice shot off of a penalty to end the half Cohasset 5, Duxbury 4. As the game wore on, Cohasset ran out of steam and Duxbury scored three quick goals to make the final Duxbury 9, Cohasset 7.  These two teams will face off again later in the season, which is sure to be another great match-up. The Cohasset U11 girls White lacrosse team traveled to Duxbury on Sunday and easily outscored the home team in two separate 7 on 7 scrimmages and then also won the 11on 11 match up 3-1.  Defense was the key to the white team’s success as they were constantly in the passing lanes and showed great hustle and determination by winning many key ground balls.  In both the scrimmage and the full field game, the white team showed an ability to make plays via the pass and did a great job of getting open in their offensive zone for clear shots on goal.  For many of the 3rd graders, it was their first organized lacrosse game and they showed they have a lot of talent that should make this team tough to beat this spring. The Girls U11 (3rd & 4th grade) Blue lacrosse team played their opener on the turf against Braintree and really dominated both 7 on 7 matches.  Limited pre-season outdoor sessions didn’t hinder Cohasset from controlling most of the ground balls, the time of possession, and the pace of the game.  The girls’ hustle, determination, and game awareness looked like that of a team in mid-season form.  The combined score of the simultaneous matches was 9 – 1 in Cohasset’s favor.  Every individual player on the Cohasset squad contributed in some important way:  either through generating goals and assists, maintaining ball control, or communicating and positioning well.  But more importantly, they played as a team; talking it up, advancing the ball up the field together, and defending their goal and clearing the ball as a unit.  Well done U11 Blue.  We have a really strong foundation to work from.  Be proud of yourselves.
